Dr Daniela Moise, DPT – Advance Core Physical Therapy and Wellness

As pregnancy progresses, even simple daily movements—like turning in bed—can feel unexpectedly difficult. For many women, the third trimester brings physical changes that affect balance, coordination, and comfort. But with a few small adjustments, this movement can feel more manageable and supported.
At Advance Core Physical Therapy, we emphasize a whole-body approach to movement—one that integrates breath, awareness, and strength. Turning in bed is a perfect example of how subtle shifts in how we breathe and move can make a big difference.
Why Turning Becomes Harder
As the belly grows, your center of gravity shifts, ligaments become more relaxed, and pressure increases on the abdominal wall and pelvic floor. This makes certain movements, especially rotational ones like turning in bed, feel less fluid—and sometimes even painful.
Breath as a Tool for Ease
One of the most helpful strategies? Breathing intentionally during the movement.
Many people try to “power through” with muscular effort, but this can lead to tension, strain, and discomfort. Breath offers a gentler, more connected option.
There’s no single “correct” way to breathe—some women feel more stable with chest breathing, while others benefit more from diaphragmatic (belly) breathing. The key is to feel what supports your body best in the moment.
A Supportive Sequence to Try
Next time you turn in bed, try this:
- Pause before the movement. Feel where your breath is.
- Inhale gently to prepare your body.
- Exhale as you begin to turn, letting the breath lead the motion.
- Engage your core lightly (as if hugging your baby) to support the transition.
- Use your arms and legs to assist, keeping the motion slow and intentional.
Why It Matters
When you move with awareness, you protect your abdominal wall and pelvic floor from unnecessary strain. You also reconnect with your breath—an essential part of labor, recovery, and daily comfort.
Every pregnancy is different. What feels supportive for one person might not work for another. At Advance Core, we honor that individuality and guide each patient to discover what feels right for their own body.
If you’re pregnant and noticing discomfort or difficulty with movement, you’re not alone. We’re here to support you with evidence-based strategies that respect your changing body and growing baby.
Let’s make movement easier—together.
