What Is Diastasis Recti?
Diastasis recti is a separation of the abdominal muscles — specifically, the rectus abdominis, or the “six-pack” muscles. It happens when the connective tissue (the linea alba) between those muscles stretches and thins, often due to:
- Pregnancy (the most common cause)
- Repeated straining (lifting incorrectly, chronic coughing, constipation)
- Improper core training
In simple terms: the belly stretches beyond its limit, and the muscles don’t fully return back together — leaving a visible or hidden gap.
Signs You Might Have Diastasis Recti:
- A “doming” or bulging belly when sitting up or lifting your head
- A soft or hollow area along the midline (often above or below the belly button)
- Core weakness or instability
- Low back pain
- Poor posture
- Pelvic floor dysfunction (incontinence, heaviness, etc.)
Why Does It Matter?
Diastasis recti isn’t just about appearance — it can affect your core stability, spine support, pelvic floor health, and even your breathing. If untreated, it may lead to chronic back pain, hernias, or prolapse in women.
How We Treat Diastasis Recti at Advance Core PT
The good news: you can heal diastasis recti with the right therapy.
At Advance Core Physical Therapy, we provide:
Core muscle retraining – We teach you how to activate deep core muscles (like the transverse abdominis) safely
Postural re-education – Because how you sit, stand, and move matters
Breath coordination – Learn to connect breath, ribs, and core
Manual therapy – Gentle hands-on techniques to release tension and restore alignment
Safe, progressive exercise programs – No planks or crunches until you’re ready
Pelvic floor integration – Because the pelvic floor and core work as a team
You’re Not Broken. You Just Need the Right Support.
Whether you gave birth months ago or years ago, diastasis recti can still be improved — no surgery needed in most cases. You deserve to feel strong, supported, and confident in your body again.
At Advance Core PT, we help women heal and thrive with expert care, one-on-one attention, and results you can see and feel.
